Artificial intelligence for weather forecasting and climate studies

At FBK an autumn school whose target audience are university students, researchers and professionals.

A unique training opportunity, offered to 25 selected students, to acquire basic and advanced skills in the use of artificial intelligence applied to weather and climate science.

Applications to take part in the ‘Artificial Intelligence for Weather and Climate Autumn School , which will be held at Fondazione Bruno Kessler‘s premises at Villa Tambosi in Villazzano (Trento), October 28 through 31, 2024 are open until August 31.

The invited audience are in particular university students, PhD students, researchers, teachers and professionals in the sector who want to exploit the potential of artificial intelligence to improve their understanding and ability to predict weather phenomena and study climate models.

‘In recent years,’ Marco Cristoforetti, Head of the Data Science for Industry and Physics Unit at Fondazione Bruno Kessler explained, ‘the use of deep learning techniques has completely revolutionised the world of meteorology, allowing more accurate weather forecasts to be produced using fewer computational resources than traditional numerical models.  This revolution will continue in the coming years and will also rapidly involve the world of climate modelling.  It is therefore of paramount importance that those involved in weather and climate sciences have complementary training, enabling them to combine the required domain expertise with the new methodologies offered by artificial intelligence.”

The intensive four-day program will offer both lectures and practical application workshops and will be conducted entirely in English. Speakers will include Simona Bordoni (University of Trento, DICAM), Sandro Luigi Fiore (University of Trento, DISI), Michael Langguth (Forschungszentrum Jülich, Institute for Advanced Simulation), Jussi Leinonen (Nvidia), Gabriella Scipione (CINECA).

The school is organized as part of the activities of the National Research Center in High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing ICSC.

FBK researchers Gabriele Franch and Elena Tomasi are part of the school’s organizing committee and will participate as speakers and tutors.

Participation in the school will be free of charge.
