Countdown to the Researchers’ Night

September 19, 2017

The appointment in Trento, in parallel with the other 52 Italian cities that join the initiative, is for Friday September 29. FBK Demo & Hands-on

With 64 Science Corners, 15 meetings and 8 Dinners with Research and many other initiatives, the occasion for staying up in the wee hours in the company of those working in scientific research for local organizations and institutions is back: researchers with the University of Trento, with Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Fondazione Edmund Mach and MUSE – Museum of Science.

The appointment in Trento, in parallel with the other 52 Italian cities that join the initiative, is for Friday September 29.

The Researchers’ Night 2017 will take place at the MUSE – Museum of Science, starting at 5 pm. This year’s honorary guest will be Nobel Prize for Physics Wolfgang Ketterle, who will engage the audience with curious experiments and telling about his research on cold atoms with temperatures close to absolute zero.

The initiative aims to offer the whole local community the opportunity to talk, in informal settings, with researchers and get to experience the passion that animates them, the motivation that inspires them, the method they apply and the results they obtain.

The Trento Researchers’ Night is an initiative promoted and organized by the University of Trento, Fondazione Bruno Kessler, Fondazione Edmund Mach and MUSE, in collaboration with the Autonomous Province of Trento and with the sponsorship of the City of Trento.

With the researchers of Fondazione Bruno Kessler, you will be able to experience first-hand exciting demonstrations.

For example, experiment with a rotating table to rebuild an object in 3D and then print it, learn about wonderful archaeological and cultural sites in Italy and around the world thanks to virtual reality, discover how machine speech recognition and an intelligent camera that reveals the presence of suspect events on the crime scene work, see which are the most innovative technologies for the use of renewable energy, discover how etectors similar to those used in large physical experiments can be used to fight cancer or how technology can recover part of the electrical and electronic equipment accumulated in landfills, to know if studying counts by using a tool that predicts the employment opportunities of people on the basis of their school choices, dine with a researcher to talk about the mysteries of Astronomy and much more.

FBK DEMOS & HANDS-ON EXPREIMENTS

DOMOSENS: TEAM PLAY FOR A WINNING PRODUCT

An innovative proposal for the Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro (Job training for High School students) Program
Seven classes of seven different schools become the departments of a company that, starting from the research result commissioned to a research center, wants to create an innovative product: a sensor to monitor hazardous gases in homes.

PerKApp: YOUR GUIDE TO A HEALTHY LIFE STYLE

A motivational app for better management of your well-being
Interact and talk with the app that suggests goals to achieve and motivates you to adopt healthy lifestyles based on the context in which you are moving.

3D REPLICATING

How to digitize and prototype an object
Experience, with the help of FBK researchers, the automatic rotating table system to render a 3D object and then print it. Within minutes it is done!

VIRTUAL REALITY FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

Immersive visits to archaeological sites
What do you know about virtual reality? Daniele will guide you in a visit that, from Trento, will lead you to the discovery of wonderful archaeological and cultural sites in Italy and around the world.

VIDEOGRAMMETRY FOR MOVEMENT RENDERING

The technology for 3D modeling movements, postures, and dynamic scenes
Erica’s cameras bring you to the discovery of videogrammetry, the technology used in Hollywood movies: through the use of special camcorders, it is possible to record in 3D and review people or objects that are moving

VIEW BIOGRAPHIES AND TRAJECTORIES

RAMBLE-ON displays people moves over time
Discover the automatic system that recognizes people’s movements in a text and displays them on a map, allowing navigation

READ A STORY…

A prototype for reading ability assessment
Whether you are a child or an adult, you can experience the machine speech recognition application that highlights mistakes made while reading a text and which produces a “reading photo” of sorts particularly useful for primary school teachers.

IL MEDICO A PORTATA DI APP (MEDICAL APP)

CoachAI helps interaction between doctors and patients
What is telemedicine? You can have a taste of it through a new app that allows patients to provide information about their health conditions and different aspects of their lifestyle and the physician to better manage interactions with their patients.

BEYOND THE VISIBLE

A meeting between science and art to expand our observation skills
Practical demonstrations on the use of optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence and SEM / EDX scanning electron microscopy for the study of pictorial art

MICRO SENSORS FOR BETTER PROTHESES

Discover the sensors that help create 3D personalized prostheses
Guido and Daniele will explain how they are built and how small sensors work to develop highly personalized prostheses

VIAGGIA PLAY & GO!

The community gets involved for more sustainable mobility
Using game concepts (points, rankings, challenges, etc.) can encourage active citizen participation. Does this approach really work? And what role do the technologies that the FBK Smart Community Lab researchers are developing have? You will be able to use the tools made and get involved first-hand by participating in the new game campaign “Trento e Rovereto Play & Go”

LOW ENERGY INTELLIGENT VISION

Here’s the anti-crime camera!
With Massimo and his colleagues, you will see a smart and low-energy camera that reveals the presence of suspicious events on the crime scene

RED like passion, BLUE like sky, GREEN like energy

The passion for energy: from green technologies for production to storage and use options
The ARES unit deals with applied research and development of energy systems. In this booth you will see the most innovative technology for reducing emissions and the use of renewable energy in sustainable construction, transportation and industrial applications, exploring research topics where FBK has a prominent position on the international scene.

DOES STUDYING COUNT?

Looking at the education impact on employment
Loris and his colleagues will show you a tool that allows to predict the employment opportunities of people based on their school choices and a range of socio-demographic characteristics

A NEW SIGHT TO DEFEAT CANCER

How to improve the precision of antitumor therapies using high energy physics
Find out how detectors similar to those used in large physics experiments can be used to fight tumors and reduce treatment side effects on healthy tissues

PARTICLE DETECTORS: HOW TO MEASURE THE INVISIBLE

From basic research to medical uses: the thousand and one applications of FBK detectors
Particle detectors are essential tools in many experiments. Find out how they work with the researchers from the IRIS and MNF teams, and touch the FBK detectors!

THE RECOVERY OF RARE EARTH ELEMENTS FROM URBAN MINES

How to reduce costs while safeguarding the environment
Recovering some of the electrical and electronic material dumped in landfills can be done through innovative technology techniques

DINNER WITH THE FBK RESEARCHER – ALL IS BLACK (OR ALMOST BLACK) AT NIGHT

Discoveries and mysteries in the Golden Age of astronomy
Thanks to the ability to make high-precision observations, the last 30 years have led to a “revolution” of our knowledge of the evolution of the Universe and its large-scale structure. The very story of these discoveries, from the “Great Debate” of the early twentieth century to the observation of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, is a great example of how scientific knowledge evolves, and how “seeing better” means not just “understanding better”, but also “seeing new things that we cannot understand”

Giovanni Garberoglio, ECT*-LISC – Fondazione Bruno Kessler

FBK takes part in the event also with the European Marie Curie project “VOLTA“, a research project on the automated generation of topographic data.
