FBK*AI 2018: main events calendar

Piero Angela, the leading Italian scientific divulgator, will be the guest of the VI Bruno Kessler Lecture, on March 19 and will give FBK Povo a lectio dedicated to how technology has modified and modified society, starting from artificial intelligence.

It will then be the turn of two scientific events – with special sessions open to the public – of the highest level:

• April 9 and 10, 2018, in Povo, “The Pleasure of AI Research“. An event intended to celebrate 30 years of research (between IRST first and FBK later) in Artificial Intelligence, bringing together the who’s who ​​of international research: we will be starting from Wolfgang Wahlster and Barbara Grosz, and include great Italian scholars such as Cristiano Castelfranchi and Rino Falcone. A rare opportunity that will bring to Trento a national and international discussion on the progress made in AI ​​and its various applications, from technology to finance. It will also be an opportunity for a greeting and public acknowledgement that the AI ​​community will dedicate to Oliviero Stock, former IRST director and internationally renowned scholar, among the pioneers of artificial intelligence in Italy.
• the second appointment is with AI*IA 2018 – Conference of the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence from 18 to 23 November 2018. After 30 years back in Trento the Conference of the Association, which now has about 900 members, it promotes the study and research on artificial intelligence through an annual event, scholarships, research groups, the magazine of the same name and, more generally, coordinating the activity in the sector in Italy. Oliviero Stock and Luigia Aiello, former directors of IRST, were also among the historical presidents of the Association. Among the side events of the scientific sessions, there will also be a large public event dedicated mainly to schools.

As always, FBK pays great attention to the younger generations and the career development of young talents, and it is to them that it dedicates its international doctoral programme and the initiatives of FBK Junior and Webvalley:

• on February 2, 2018 the second “FBK Phd Day” will be held in FBK Povo, the annual day dedicated to FBK doctoral students, which this year includes the keynote of Elena Cabrio, alumna FBK, with a doctorate in Information and Communication Technologies on the automatic treatment of text (in particular on semantic analysis), now a professor associated with the University of Nice. On this occasion, the prize for best doctoral work in 2017 and the certificates of excellence, awarded by FBK to students who obtained outstanding publications at the end of their doctoral studies, will also be awarded.
• from 5 to 9 March 2018, at the Mechatronics Pole in Rovereto will be the turn of the [Pro]M-Camp – Industry 4.0 Student Challenge, a new project that will involve about 20 students from high school aged between 17 and 19 years. The students will be engaged in a “challenge” aimed at the realization of a prototype in the industrial field: the aim is to offer a full immersion experience in a new generation laboratory such as the[Pro]M Facility in Rovereto.
• from 17 June to 7 July 2018, the eighteenth edition of FBK WebValley, FBK’s data science summer camp dedicated to young talents between 17 and 18 years old. Started in 2001 with the aim of involving high school students living in Trentino Alto-Adige, over the years it has become a great opportunity for national and international students to experiment with scientific research. Since its first edition, it has involved about 300 students. The theme of Summer School 2018 will be “Machine Learning for Healthcare with Privacy-by-Design”, a theme that will be continued throughout the rest of the year with a series of projects carried out by small groups of students. The laboratory will be managed in collaboration with the “Artigianelli” Institute of Trento. Young people will be given an introduction to data science and machine learning, with particular attention to the challenges and risks related to the use of automatic learning techniques in the health care sector.
