MILAN TRANSITION DAYS 2021: FBK’S CONTRIBUTION

November 30, 2021

Promoted by the Giangiacomo Feltrinelli Foundation, an unprecedented discussion was held at the end of September 2021 on the topics of ecological transition: mobility, energy, food and water

The European Green Deal, from words to deeds, can be attained through the construction of new economies capable of protecting the environment and its resources, and protecting against social costs and new forms of inequality.

The Milano Transition Days showed how many Italian organizations in the economic and productive sector have already embraced the green transition and how the innovation ecosystem is ready to meet the challenges of the PNRR (Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza, the Italian recovery plan), with many resources to spend quickly, in the wake of the many European initiatives that are accompanying the transition: the Covenant of Mayors for climate and energy; the Climate Pact or COP26.

The analysis of these programs suggested the identification of three priority areas for action: mobility, energy, food and water. Three domain experts from Fondazione Bruno Kessler were invited to contribute to the discussions. Below, the relating extracts of the publication with the conference proceedings.

1. The ecological transition in mobility has been explored through three working groups, which look at it from three different aspects: shared mobility, electric mobility and slow mobility.
Electric mobility
Electric cars and other electric vehicles offer the hope that mobility can become more climate-friendly in the future, but for this to be achieved by 2050, their entire life cycle, from production to use and recycling, needs to be taken into account. Particular attention must also be paid to the energy adopted during the entire life cycle of the vehicle. How does this potential reshape cities? What does it take to develop this vision? Who is pursuing it and how? What strategy can be implemented by the Italian ecosystem for its implementation?
– With the talks by Luigi Crema, Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy at FBK, and Matteo Testi, Researcher/Hydrogen Supervisor with the same Center –

2. The topic of energy transition focused on the energy sources for decarbonization, energy saving and efficiency, and the paradigm of the circular economy in the energy sector.
Energy for decarbonization
Building an energy sector with net zero emissions by 2050 requires an unprecedented transformation of the way energy is produced, transported and used across Europe. What does it take to develop this vision? Who is pursuing it and how? What strategy can be implemented by the Italian ecosystem for its implementation?
– With the talk by Luigi Crema, Director of the Center for Sustainable Energy at FBK –

3. The ecological transition in production, distribution, management and use of food and water was explored starting from: the water footprint of the agricultural sector; the circular management of food waste; access to a healthy and fair diet.
Water footprint reduction
If water is an increasingly scarce and precious commodity, agriculture is one of the sectors that most needs new solutions in the management of water resources. Saving water means not only protecting a fundamental resource, but guaranteeing the right to access to water in the future. What does it take to develop this vision? Who is pursuing it and how? What strategy can be implemented by the Italian ecosystem for its implementation?
– With the talk by Raffaele Giaffreda, Chief IoT Scientist in the Digital Industry Research Center at FBK –
