Agreement between FBK and Politecnico di Milano signed
The agreement will see the two institutions engaged in joint actions in strategic areas ranging from microelectronics to photonics, artificial intelligence and MedTech.
Today, Politecnico di Milano and Trento-based Fondazione Bruno Kessler signed an agreement in which they commit to joint actions in a number of strategic areas: microelectronics, photonics, artificial intelligence, medical and biomedical technologies (MedTech), agriculture, digital industry and health, and quantum sciences.
“Filling the innovation gap that leaves us behind in Europe and that Europe needs in order to grow is the result of our ability to work as a system, to build networks of excellence in the area of major technology challenges, first and foremost artificial intelligence. – Politecnico di Milano President Donatella Sciuto commented – In this perspective, the collaboration between Politecnico di Milano and Fondazione Bruno Kessler was created for the implementation of platforms and advanced materials according to a sustainable approach, at the heart of our development dynamics. The agreement will also make it possible to strengthen the skills of young researchers, focusing on higher education and PhDs as key levers to increase competitiveness, since we are certain that the university is an extraordinary pool of talent.”
In the field of photonics, both institutions boast nearly a quarter century of experience in the manipulation of light on silicon chips, a technology used in telecommunications, biomedical sensing, scientific instruments and, more recently, in quantum devices.
The agreement will enable the parties to strengthen expertise in integrated photonics including technology research, university training, chip fabrication and integration in the most strategic applications. In this context, the work of Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Politecnico di Milano will focus on enabling new platforms and new materials to make integrated chips increasingly fast, pervasive and less energy-intensive.
Ferruccio Resta, president of Fondazione Bruno Kessler stressed, “The signing of this framework agreement represents a decisive step toward the construction of a national ecosystem of innovation, capable of facing the strategic challenges of our time and, at the same time, of competing on a global scale. The collaboration between two institutions of excellence such as Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Politecnico di Milano not only strengthens advanced research and education, but also paves the way for solutions capable of radically transforming the key sectors of our future, propelling Italy into a position of technological leadership. The future of research depends on the ability to systematize skills, talents and financial resources. In this context, tools such as joint PhDs and large-scale projects, funded both at the European and Italian levels, will become the engine of real transformation. ”
Thanks to the understanding, specific application agreements will be concluded aimed at the implementation of collaborative projects between researchers from the two institutions and the establishment of joint research laboratories, possibly including the possible sharing of infrastructure.
In addition, doctoral courses will be activated at the Polytechnic in relation to which Fondazione Bruno Kessler will be able to fund doctoral fellowships – in a number and manner to be established -upon agreement in the areas of joint activities.
Fondazione Bruno Kessler will support the creation of university master’s degrees in accordance with the terms and procedures provided for in the university’s regulations.
