For a Human-Centered AI

Massimiliano Luca is “Emerging Scientist” 2025

September 17, 2025

The young researcher and Science Ambassador of the Augmented Intelligence Centre of FBK was awarded by the international Complex System Society, which promotes and supports the development of complex system science

Luca was awarded by the  Complex System Society “for his early-career contributions in complexity science using innovative research in spatio-temporal modeling, human mobility and urban dynamics, and his participation in the complex systems community.”

Complex systems are sets of interconnected elements that interact with each other to generate new behaviours and properties. The study of these systems is interdisciplinary by definition, ranging from transport networks to energy infrastructure, from climate change to global economic and social dynamics. Their analysis bridges the gap between pure and applied science and provides the tools to address the increasingly complex problems of our modern society.

I am deeply honoured to receive the Emerging Scientist Award from the Complex Systems Society. This recognition is not only a milestone for my work, but also a tribute to all the people who have supported me, like my colleagues in the lab, mentors, collaborators across disciplines, and everyone outside FBK who helped shape my multidisciplinary path and vision” commented with great satisfaction Massimiliano Luca. Then he adds: “Complex systems are by nature interconnected, and I believe that advancing our understanding of them requires both strong ideas and a strong community. This prize motivates me to keep pushing at the intersections of AI, urban studies, and mobility, to contribute to smarter, fairer, and more sustainable societies.

The Emerging Scientist award

The Complex Systems Society is an international society that promotes the development of all aspects of complex systems science within the international scientific community. Among its various recognitions, the Emerging Scientist Award is dedicated to young researchers, within three years of completing their PhD, whose early career achievements show great promise in advancing the field of complexity science.

Since 2025, Massimiliano Luca has been a FBK Science Ambassador, one of the spokesperson of Fondazione Bruno Kessler selected and properly trained to talk about research with media and the audience.
