WebValley 2025 – International

Candidates can apply within Sunday, March 23, to participate in “WebValley 2025 – International,” the summer school organized by Fondazione Bruno Kessler and dedicated to students who have attended 4th year of high school during the 2024/25 school year.

As has already been consolidated in the past two editions, the school will be hosted at the Artigianelli Institute in Trento and participants (including girls and boys from Trento) will be staying at the Archbishop’s Institute. The 3-week school will be held from 06/15/2025 to 07/06/2025.

This year’s edition is dedicated to the encounter between artificial intelligence, meteorology and climate science. The students, in collaboration with researchers from Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK), will experience firsthand how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing weather forecasting and the study of climate globally. Through sophisticated machine learning techniques and the latest approaches in data science, participants will develop and analyze models ranging from short-term forecasts to future climate scenarios, using data from ground and satellite stations, along with long-term global climate archives. As part of this immersive experience, students will be actively involved in creating a comprehensive analytics framework, improving their skills in data management and analysis, and gaining hands-on experience with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies.

Activities will be led by Fondazione Bruno Kessler’s Data Science for Industry and Physics and Data Science for Health Units (with the Centers for “Digital Industry” and “Digital Health & Wellbeing”, respectively), supported by local and national weather agencies, international research institutes and industry companies.  Indicatively, the structuring of the camp includes 1 week devoted to courses (lectures in the morning, practical activities in the afternoon, focused know-how and workshops) and 2 weeks dedicated to the project.

This year’s edition will also be open to international students, so students are required to be proficient in English comprehension and speaking.

Fondazione Bruno Kessler is announcing up to 12 scholarships (a number of reserves will be selected as well), a number of them will go to students from the province of Trento.  Some additional applications, up to a maximum of 20 in total, will be opened in May for international students, including finalists at the ISEF Prize, the largest international scientific competition for non-university students. The grants cover the expenses of specialized laboratory activities as well as meals and accomodation. Arrangements for meals and accomodation are borne by FBK. Families may be asked to pay part of organized sports and social activities on weekends.

The application should be completed at https://webvalley.fbk.eu/application using Track General.

Submitted applications will be reviewed by a panel of experts, who will prepare a merit ranking using the information received. In particular, the following will be taken into account: school report cards of the last two years, CV, motivation letter, letter of recommendation, pre-recorded interview-video, according to the methods indicated on the website. Soft skills, personal motivation and curiosity are very important criteria in the selection phase. Over the years, the schools of origin have been and continue to be diverse and heterogeneous, and the selection criteria also include gender balance and an indicative maximum limit of two students per school.

The selection process may include a personal online interview, at the discretion of the committee, which may take place before the application deadline.

Students participating in WebValley will have the opportunity to accrue 150 hours toward their SCHOOL-TO-WORK PROGRAM, at the discretion of their schools.
