Aldo Moro: thought and politics. The National Edition of his works.

May 8, 2017

The project for the national online and open access edition of Moro's works, to which Fondazione Bruno Kessler is collaborating through their Italian-German Historical Institute (FBK-ISIG) and Digital Humanities team with the Center for Information and Communication Technologies (FBK-ICT), will be presented next Wednesday, May 10, at the Historical Archive of the President of the Republic's Office, in Rome.

On the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the death of the statesman, the Aldo Moro Academy of Historical Studies, in collaboration with the National Edition of the works of Aldo Moro, has organized a meeting titled “ALDO MORO: THOUGHT AND POLITICS. The National Edition of his works “.

FBK is the partner chosen by the Scientific Committee of the National Edition to develop the software for the analysis of Moro’s writings. Il Mulino will publish the work (which will be freely accessible online) and FBK (with their Digital Humanities research unit of the ICT Center and FBK-Isig) will implement the tools for the automatic document analysis, which will allow some textual content research (key concepts, person names, places, co-occurrences…), and on the writing style.

For some years now, the Digital Humanities team and the Italian-German Historical Institute have been working to develop new tools for analyzing writings and political discourses (http://isig.fbk.eu/it/progetti/analysis-language-and-content-digital-environment). DThe Foundation is involved, as scientific partner, in two of the three national edition projects funded by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism (MiBACT) (Moro’s Works, De Gasperi’s correspondence).

Researchers  Sara Tonelli, Head of the Digital Humanities team, with Giovanni Moretti and Maurizio Cau (FBK-Isig) who will be the curator of a book of Moro’s philosophical-legal writings will be in Rome for FBK.

The meeting will be held at 3.30 pm, at the Conference Room of the Historical Archive of the President of the Republic’s Office, Palazzo Sant’Andrea, Via del Quirinale, 30.
The speakers of the initiative will be Alfonso Alfonsi, Andrea Angiolini, Ugo De Siervo, Guido Formigoni, Marina Giannetto, Renato Moro, Sara Tonelli.

More details on the project (by the Aldo Moro Historical Studies Academy)

The National Edition of the works of Aldo Moro was established, with decree of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, a hundred years after the birth of the statesman. This is a challenging and innovative project that will lead in the coming years to the critical, philologically annotated Edition, of published and unpublished writings by Aldo Moro, with a historical introduction. The work will be completed in digital format and will be the first national edition to propose a combination (with regard to speeches and interviews) of written texts and audio-visual and/or sound documents. The digital format of the work, which will be made available for free, will allow not only to make it universally usable, but also searchable in a complex way. Particular attention will also be given to the internationalization of results. The public presentation is an opportunity to deepen the National Edition’s scientific value and also to reflect on the meaning that fully “giving Moro his voice back”, thus allowing scholars and the broader public to compare their understanding of his views with what he really said and wrote, beyond the many prejudices and stereotypes that have settled on his figure, could have. All this, in the belief that an approach to Aldo Moro based on rigorous investigation and solid methodology, will elicit the emergence of the complex human, political and intellectual profile of a man who tackled in an original way critical problems for the progress of the national community and international relations.
