“Waste to Hydrogen system dynamic modelling” wins the Best Application Paper Award
The award was conferred during the Asian Modelica & FMI Conference 2026 to the HyRES Unit researcher Michele Bolognese.
The paper titled Waste to Hydrogen system dynamic modelling and written by Michele Bolognese with colleagues Emanuele Martinelli, Michele Urbani, Matteo Testi and the Nextchem collaborators Annarita Salladini, Alessia Borgogna and Maria Rosaria Pepe was selected by the Program Committee as the recipient of the Award.
The paper was awarded as it demonstrates outstanding academic originality, technical depth, and practical value, and has made a distinguished contribution to the scholarly exchange at the conference.ย
The Award demonstrates that the Centre for Sustainable Energy is not only up-to-date with modelling tools, but is actually a pioneer in exploring and experimenting with them.ย Michele Bolognese is specialised in dynamic modeling which aims at replicating a system, with all its components, by creating dynamic models through softwares based on object-oriented language. The HyRES Unit has a strong experience in dynamic modelling and elaboration of scenarios, and offers the opportunity to improve and optimize systems and industrial processes through numerical modeling by using software such as Modelica and proprietary code.
The Asian Modelica & FMI Conference 2026 took place from 20 to 22 September in Hangzhou (China) and was organized by the Beihang University (at Hangzhou campus) and Nanjing Yuansi SimTek Co., Ltd. in cooperation with the Modelica Association.
During the event, the HyRES researcher had the opportunity to make two presentations:
- ๐๐๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฎ ๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐น๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐น ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ showcased how Modelica supports the Centre researchers in capturing the full dynamic interplay between PEM electrolysis and metal hydride storage. The presentation is part of the work implemented within the REMEDHYS project.
- ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ ๐๐ผ ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ด๐ฒ๐ป ๐๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ ๐ฑ๐๐ป๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด focused on turning waste into a clean hydrogen stream and Michele presented the dynamic modelling of the gasification and purification train we developed within the IPCEI Hy2Rome project.
The event is an important occasion for people working with modeling, simulation, and control applications such as Modelica language designers, tool vendors and library developers, and that use Modelica and/or other Modelica Association standards and it provides users with the opportunity to stay informed about the latest language, library, and tool developments, and to exchange best practices and lessons learnt on similar modeling problems.
