Trento awarded for smart video surveillance

November 28, 2022

The Municipality of Trento received the ECOHITECH AWARD 2022 for the category "Services to citizens" at the Key Energy - Ecomondo fair in Rimini. The city stood out for intelligent video surveillance, funded by the European projects Marvel and Protector, thanks to the collaboration with FBK's Digital Society research center.

The awards were presented to the most innovative projects Within Key Energy, the Italian event dedicated to sustainable cities.

The city stood out for intelligent video surveillance, which aims to analyze audio and video streams to identify potential dangerous situations through artificial intelligence and in total respect of personal data.

Founded in 1998, the Ecohitech award is the most important award given to public administrations for the adoption of innovative technologies and energy saving.

The Marvel project, included in the Horizon 2020 program, has a three-year duration (from January 2021 to December 2023) and uses real-time video and audio analysis to which artificial intelligence techniques are applied without violating privacy.

The Municipality of Trento represents a case to understand what happens in some areas of the city where cameras and/or microphones are installed.

From the analysis of images and, where present, audio, the objective is to automatically detect potentially problematic situations and to send a warning to the operations center of the local Police in real time.

The two-year Protector project (from March 2021 to March 2023), aims to improve the security of places of worship through a set of innovative measures.

The Municipality of Trento was involved in the continuation and extension of the pilot experiment started with the European eSecurity project regarding the improvement of the urban security management system, with particular reference to the prevention of terrorist attacks and the so-called protection of public spaces and “soft targets”.
