Digital society: FBK wins 7 European projects in 2021
Thanks to the application of artificial intelligence and 5G technology, innovation will be pushed in various areas of society such as urban security, cyberbullying prevention, PA digitization, cultural heritage enhancement. The funding amounts to almost 3 million euros
(v.l.) Seven international scientific projects for European funding of almost 3 million euros go to Fondazione Bruno Kessler.
The 2021 research activity of the Digital Society center, established with the new organization of Fondazione Bruno Kessler and dedicated to digital technologies that are redesigning our society, has started at full speed.
Between January and April, the [email protected], INTERLINK, KID_ACTION projects will start, coordinated at European level by the Trentino based research center, as well as the MARVEL, ODEUROPA, PROTECTOR, DINoS5G projects, which will see FBK participate with relevant national and international organizations.
These are frontier projects, which thanks also to the application of artificial intelligence and 5G technologies, will push innovations in various areas of society such as urban security, cyberbullying prevention, PA digitization, cultural heritage enhancement, and for which FBK will receive a total European funding of nearly 2,893,000 euros.
“Obtaining these European projects”, stressed Marco Pistore, director of the Digital Society center, “is a great twofold result: last year’s hard work with all colleagues in view of the launch of the FBK Digital Society center has been rewarded and it has been confirmed how important it is to be able to combine advanced research on innovative technologies with the impact in key areas for society, especially to excel at a European level. “
A secure and reusable Artificial Intelligence platform for Edge computing in beyond 5G Networks

Artificial intelligence has become a great innovation driver and is one of the pillars of the fourth industrial revolution. The project is dedicated in particular to accuracy and performance of AI-enabled platforms, to their integration into potentially autonomous decision-making systems. This challenge will be addressed by leveraging the concept of “reusable, safe and reliable AI for network automation”. European manufacturers, academics and innovative SMEs commit to achieving an EU-wide impact on industry-relevant aspects of AI-for-networks and networks-for-AI paradigms in networks beyond 5G.

The project aims to overcome the barriers that prevent public administrations from reusing and sharing services with citizens and businesses by developing a new collaborative governance model and a set of technology tools that will provide the basic functionalities needed to allow private actors to contribute to providing a service. The project will test the co-production of services by PA and private organizations in three use cases for the partner PAs: the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Latvian Ministry of Regional Development and the City of Zaragoza.

The project aims to prevent and fight cyberbullying among children and teenagers through interactive education and gamification, within formal and non-formal learning contexts in 10 European countries. The project, which will last 2 years starting from January 2021, is co-funded by the REC Program of the Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers of the European Commission. It is coordinated by Fondazione Bruno Kessler and includes among its partners the Autonomous Province of Trento, Amnesty International Italia, European Schoolnet (Belgium) and Youth for Exchange and Understanding (Belgium).
MULTIMODAL EXTREME SCALE DATA ANALYTICS FOR SMART CITIES ENVIRONMENTS

The project will develop a revolutionary framework enabling multimodal perception and intelligence for the recognition of audiovisual scenes and event detection in a smart city environment. The goal is to analyze and extract data from the multimodal audiovisual streams of a Smart City and help decision makers improve the quality of life and services to citizens without violating ethical and privacy boundaries.
Negotiating Olfactory and Sensory Experiences in Cultural Heritage Practice and Research
EU funding for FBK: € 306.450,00
The first European initiative to use artificial intelligence (AI) to study the relevance of odors and smell and to discover how odors have shaped our communities and traditions. An archive of smells and their meaning, created by semantic web experts and cultural historians, will be stored online and made accessible to all.
PROTECTing places of wORship
EU funding for FBK: € 511.353,00
The project aims to significantly improve the protection strategies of places of worship in Europe, through coordination, cooperation and communication between law enforcement agencies, public authorities, religious institutions, the world of research and education. It is co-funded by the ISFP Program of the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs of the European Commission.
Diagnostic Integrated Networks of Satellite and 5G
ESA funding for FBK: € 180.371,00
The aim of the project is to develop an innovative technological solution for railway infrastructure smart maintenance (lead partner of the project is RFI), aimed at increasing its pervasiveness, through the integration of 5G and satellite terrestrial communication networks. The creation of more resilient telecommunication networks serving the railway infrastructure will allow a strong increase in the supervision capacity of the entire railway network.
