Narges Takhtkeshha wins first place prize at IGARSS Geopitch in Athens

FBK Ph.D. student has won the 2024 IEEE IGARSS competition of innovative ideas for a sustainable future through geoscience and remote sensing.

Narges Takhtkeshha, a joint PhD student of FBK’s 3D Optical Metrology (3DOM) unit, Technical University of Vienna and Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI), recently won the first prize in the GeoPitch competition held in Athens during the annual IEEE IGARSS 2024 conference. The GRSS (Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society) is one of 39 societies that are part of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the largest academic and professional society consisting of around 460,000 members from 160 countries.

The GeoPitch competition involved submitting an innovative idea to address sustainability challenges through the application of remote sensing and geoscience technologies.

Narges Takhtkeshha ranked first by presenting her research ‘Multispectral LiDAR processing to support precision forestry’ focusing on the application of multispectral laser scanning (LiDAR) systems to forestry for tackling sustainability challenges and meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Narges Takhtkeshha graduated and specialized in geomatic engineering and remote sensing at the K. N. Toosi University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. Her main research interest focuses on the analysis of geospatial data, in particular 3D data.

Since 2023, she is pursuing her studies within a joint PhD program between Fondazione Bruno Kessler and the Technical University of Vienna, financially supported by EuroSDR. The area of her PhD research is multispectral laser scanning systems and 3D imaging using artificial intelligence algorithms applied in particular to forest and urban mapping.

“I started my PhD at FBK in March 2023, under the supervision of Fabio Remondino (FBK), Gottfried Mandlburger (TU Vienna) e Juha Hyyppa (FGI), marking the beginning of an exciting career path.  Being part of FBK’s 3DOM unit has significantly improved my knowledge especially in 3D data processing. The visiting period in Vienna has also enriched very much my expertise in geospatial data analyses.
 I am thrilled to be doing my PhD at FBK, a research center that offers many opportunities to collaborate in research and industrial projects in a professional and friendly environment, it was exactly what I was looking for,” Narges Takhtkeshha said.
