Trento capital of hydrogen: the Zero Carbon Community meeting held at FBK

It is increasingly crucial to formulate a national industrial strategy on hydrogen, supported by a shared governance system among various ministries. Reiterating this strongly are the partners of The European House – Ambrosetti’s Zero Carbon Community, who gathered in Trento to discuss together with local and international stakeholders the importance of this energy source as a vector for decarbonization. It was a high-profile event that underscored Trentino’s role as an example of an area at the forefront of sustainability and the development of enabling technologies in a sector that is now critical to protecting the Planet.  The meeting was organized by Ambrosetti in collaboration with Trentino Sviluppo and Fondazione Bruno Kessler, which hosted it at its Povo premises.

The numbers and projections presented during the meeting reveal that in Italy the entire hydrogen supply chain could generate between 22 and 37 billion euros in added value and between 320,000 and 540,000 jobs by 2050.  Important scenarios, within which Trentino will be able to play a crucial role, representing once again a reference point in the implementation of innovative technologies and economic and industrial development policies. These include the establishment, by 2026, of a hydrogen valley in the province of Trento and the creation in Rovereto of a technology hub dedicated entirely to hydrogen.

“The new Hub,” explained Achille Spinelli, councillor for Economic Development, Labor, University and Research of the Autonomous Province of Trento, “will host ondazione Bruno Kessler’s Center for Sustainable Energy and will be a meeting point between cutting-edge technological activity and useful experimentation for companies operating in the energy industry.  Thanks to its different souls, it will therefore act as a hinge between the world of research and the production world, allowing Trentino to position itself as an attractive area for innovative companies.”

On the other hand, as far as the creation of a hydrogen valley in Trentino is concerned, it was mentioned during the discussion and debate event that, thanks to the reconversion of disused industrial areas, new plants and technologies for the production and storage of green hydrogen, useful for the development of a sustainable local economy, will be put into operation.  This is an exciting project for which the Autonomous Province of Trento has already obtained 14 million euros under PNRR and which will see the essential involvement of local companies.

During the event, a leading role was taken by Fondazione Bruno Kessler, which, with its Center for Sustainable Energy, has been promoting internationally important projects on hydrogen for years. “We are engaged,” Luigi Crema, director of FBK’s Center for Sustainable Energy said, “in providing all-round support for the creation of a local industrial ecosystem, with relevant scale infrastructure and a one-stop-shop process from research to technology validation, in partnership with the Autonomous Province of Trento and Trentino Sviluppo. Our goal is to develop opportunities in the area and a solid supply chain environment. We do all this with daily commitment and passion. “
