FBK and FiemmePER have created Fiemme Sostenibile
The kick-off meeting was held on October 15 at the Municipal Library – La Stazione in Predazzo, where researchers and project partners presented the initiative in a plenary session. They introduced the participating school classes to the project’s objectives, outlined key sustainability issues, and placed the work within its scientific context.
Fiemme Sostenibile: Giovani Protagonisti del Cambiamento is a project aimed at encouraging dialogue on environmental issues in local schools. Fondazione Bruno Kessler, coordinated by the Scholars and PhD Program team and supported by the Center for Sustainable Energy, is partnering to encourage high school students to actively engage with the challenges of the green transition and climate change.
The joint initiative between Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Fondazione FiemmePER is funded by Fondazione Caritro through the 2025 School–Local Communities Networks Call, with the specific aim of promoting a culture of sustainability in the high schools of Val di Fiemme. Particular focus is given to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues. The goal of the project is to develop informed citizens who can understand the challenges of the ecological transition and acquire skills relevant to future career paths.
Sustainability plays a fundamental role in addressing the climate crisis and in consciously guiding the technological revolution towards a fairer and more environmentally friendly future. The three pillars of sustainability summarized in the ESG axronym, represent the necessary response to today’s global challenges. Actively involving students in these issues, bringing them the results and objectives of the research, is therefore key, “Sara Stemberger, researcher at the Center for Sustainable Energy at FBK, explained.
Using a hands-on and participatory approach, the participating schools — La Rosa Bianca High Schools in Cavalese and Predazzo, and CFP-ENAIP in Tesero — will play a central role in a co-design process aimed at developing a Sustainability Plan. This initiative will be supported by scientific research and innovation promoted by FBK, as well as by a strong local network of businesses, cooperatives, and professionals. This network, coordinated by FiemmePER, includes QSA, Bio Energia Fiemme, Fiemme Tremila and apt Fiemme Cembra, as well as Slow Food Trentino Alto Adige, which actively support the project. This way, the project also becomes a bridge between schools, job markets and the local community.
Andrea Ciresa, Secretary of Fondazione FiemmePER stressed that “our local communities want to demonstrate once again how the synergy between school, the world of research, companies and communities is not only important, but necessary to design paths and processes that look to the future. The facilitation role played by FiemmePER aims to be an example of cooperation inside and outside the valley that will allow our young people to have experiences of the highest level, remaining in close contact with the entrepreneurial fabric and with those who experience sustainability every day in their production processes.”
The project will be carried out in several phases: it will begin with a listening phase to identify the interests and needs of students and teachers, followed by a joint kick-off meeting with all partners, the formation of a student coordination group (GCo), and the launch of collaboratively defined training and project activities. External tutors from the partner organizations will assist students by providing expertise, inspiration, and practical assistance, with the goal of creating a concrete path aligned with the identified needs.
“We are very happy to bring this project to Val di Fiemme – Claudia Dolci, project manager for Fondazione Bruno Kessler said – the result of months of discussion and collaboration with teachers, school directors and FiemmePER, who believed and supported it. iemme Sostenibile: Giovani Protagonisti del Cambiamento is not only an innovative educational initiative, but also a pathway that connects schools with scientific research and future career opportunities, equipping the next generation to face the challenges of the ecological transition with awareness and practical tools.
The experience is designed for third- and fourth-year students, who will explore topics such as resource optimization , innovation, communication, and sustainable planning. Students will have the opportunity to work, experiment, and learn through the scientific method and collaborative teamwork, enhancing their critical thinking and organizational skills. The project, based on the DomoSens model, is organized into Work Packages comprising various activities, each assigned to a class according to the relevance of the task to the specialization of their respective high school. Each class will be responsible for the realization of the activity, in the ways and times established by FBK (coordinator and scientific manager of the project), just as if it were a project partner that contributes with its specific competence to the overall realization of the objectives.

The project will run throughout the 2025/26 school year, with completion expected by the end of 2026. It aligns with the themes of the new European Directive on Sustainability Reporting, enabling students to become familiar with the tools and language increasingly demanded by the professional world. Val di Fiemme, thanks to a network of businesses committed to the ecological transition, offers an ideal context for a structured collaboration between school, research and the local communities.
