Center for Digital Industry's Demo Day: an event to present ongoing projects to the FBK community and to create new collaborations among research teams
Researchers, PhDs and students from the Center for Digital Industry showcased their demos and presented posters about the projects they are working on ranging from irrigation to civil defense exercises, anti-counterfeiting systems, neutral translations, and more.
“The Center for Digital Industry Demo Day is at its second edition: today everyone has the opportunity to present their work and show it in practice. Demo Day is important because it clearly demonstrates how much we invest in technology solutions and also because it allows us to share information and create new opportunities for collaboration among teams,” center director Alessandro Cimatti said.
In fact, Thursday, September 19, experts from the eight units that are part of the Center for Digital Industry presented FBK colleagues with sixteen demos and as many posters related to the projects they are currently working on. Also, everyone had the chance to vote for the demo they thought was most interesting and best displayed: in this edition, the OpenIOT unit won with its demo of the IRRITRE project “DSS for IoT- and AI-based irrigation.”
“This is a platform for managing water resources: we collect data from various sources – such as satellites, weather forecasts, weather stations – and combine them with data coming from the field, for example from a sensor called a tensiometer. By combining these data, we have developed predictive models that allow us to know how the moisture in the soil evolves and thus optimize irrigation, saving water and better managing water resources,”Mattia Antonini said.
The projects presented were many and covered different topics including anti-counterfeiting systems to protect Made in Italy products to a tool intended for administrations and institutions to manage urban and cultural heritage-related 3D data, projects to improve industrial processes for painting and changing hydraulic presses, the development of systems for gender-neutral machine translation.
The event provided an important opportunity for researchers to not only share the results of their work, but also to gain an overview of the projects being carried out by the center. This overview encouraged the emergence of new ideas and possible synergies among the various research teams, thus strengthening the potential for future collaborative developments.
To learn about some of the demos presented, follow FBK’s Instagram profile (@fbkresearch) in the coming weeks: the center’s researchers will talk about the projects of their research units in short videos recorded during the Demo Day.
